Ordering of a postpartum ultrasound by a midwife.

The ministry has received inquiries regarding the section of the Schedule of Facility Fees for Independent Health Facilities which states that “Ultrasound for normal, complicated or high risk pregnancy (but not for the postpartum period) rendered in an Independent Health Facility (IHF) is insured when referred by a midwife who is a member of the College of Midwives of Ontario.”

The language in the Schedule of Facility Fees, as well as section 9 of the Diagnostic Ultrasound Preamble in the Schedule of Benefits for Physician Services, is applied by the Ministry to mean that postpartum ultrasounds cannot be claimed as pregnancy ultrasounds as the individual is no longer pregnant.  In the postpartum period, midwives have the scope of practice to order insured pelvic ultrasounds, and IHFs can be paid the facility fee to provide a pelvic ultrasound, which is the appropriate service.

If you require further information please contact the IHF Program by telephone at 613-548-6637 or by email at: IHFP@ontario.ca
