    Thyroid

Thyroid is a endocrine gland that regulates metabolism and is located in the neck. Thyrroid ultrasound is a painless, fast exam that uses sound waves to create pictures of the thyroid gland that is located in the neck. You will be asked to lie on the exam table with your neck hyperextended. The ultrasound technologist will spread a small amount of gel over your neck and sweep a small hand held device called a transducer over the area of interest. There is no radiation involved and no preparation is required.

High frequency sound waves are used to make a picture of the thyroid gland.

The condition under which this exam is done if your doctor:

  • Feels a lump
  • To differentiate if the lump felt is a fluid-filled benign cyst or solid nodule
  • To assess if the thyroid gland is enlarged due to goiter
  • Used to guide in the aspiration of the fluid from a cyst.

The examination takes approximately 10 – 15 minutes to complete and it helps your clinician to plan the appropriate course of treatment or management.
