A biopsy is a procedure where a small sample of tissue is taken to be tested for disease. It is commonly used to evaluate lumps or abnormal findings, and is performed by a radiologist under image guidance with local anaesthetic.
Types of biopsies
- Needle biopsy. A small sample is taken using a needle (most common).
- Surgical biopsy. A larger sample or lump is removed.

How to prepare
- Inform your doctor if you may be pregnant
- Share any medications you are taking, especially blood thinners
- Mention any allergies, particularly to anaesthetic

Do I need a requisition for a biopsy?
Yes. We accept a valid requisition from any licensed Ontario healthcare provider, on any form, from any clinic or hospital.
Is a biopsy covered by OHIP?
Yes. With a valid requisition, OHIP covers biopsies in full. There is no co-payment, no facility fee and nothing to claim back.

How do I book a biopsy?
Book online or call 416-462-0064, and have your requisition ready. A biopsy is always by appointment.
What should I bring?
Your Ontario health card, your signed requisition, and a list of your current medications.
When will my doctor get the results?
The radiologist's report reaches your doctor in 24 to 48 hours. You can also see your images and reports online through PocketHealth.
