How accurate is a mammogram?
Mammograms are the most effective tool for early breast cancer detection. They can identify changes in breast tissue before symptoms appear, significantly improving treatment outcomes.
How long does a mammogram take?
The scan itself takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Your full appointment is typically completed within 20 minutes.
Is a mammogram safe?
Yes. Mammograms use a very low dose of radiation and are considered safe for routine screening.
How often should I get a mammogram?
Most women aged 40 and over should have a mammogram every 1 to 2 years. Your frequency may vary based on personal risk factors.
Do I need a doctor’s referral to get a mammogram?
If you are eligible for screening (the criteria above), you can book directly without a referral through the Ontario Breast Screening Program.
How much does a mammogram cost?
Screening mammograms are covered by OHIP through the Ontario Breast Screening Program for eligible patients.
Can I get a mammogram if I have implants?
Yes. Additional images may be taken to ensure clear visualization, but mammograms are still safe and effective for patients with implants. Please tell us when you book, so we can allow extra time.
What will my mammogram results show?
Your results will indicate whether your breast tissue appears normal or if further imaging is recommended. If anything requires follow-up, our team will guide you through the next steps.
